Ghana National Council Announces Cancellation of 2025 GhanaFest® (Chicago, IL) — In a move that has disappointed many in the Ghanaian-American community and beyond, the Ghana National Council (GNC) and its affiliate organizations have announced the cancellation of this year’s GhanaFest®, one of the Midwest’s most prominent cultural festivals celebrating Ghanaian heritage.

Traditionally held on the last Saturday of July on Chicago’s South Side, GhanaFest® has been a summer staple for 36 years, drawing attendees from across the U.S. and even internationally. The event features traditional Ghanaian music, food, dance, and fashion, and serves as a powerful expression of cultural pride and community solidarity.

Organizers cite “unforeseen circumstances” that have significantly impacted budgeting and pricing as the primary reasons behind the difficult decision. Although the specific details were not disclosed, the GNC emphasized that the challenges were beyond their control and that continuing with the event this year would compromise the quality and accessibility that attendees have come to expect.

“The GNC remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that all attendees, vendors, and volunteers can fully enjoy GhanaFest® in a worry-free and cost-effective environment,” read the official statement. “Our goal is always to celebrate Ghanaian culture in the most authentic and inclusive way possible.”

Despite the setback, the council expressed gratitude for the community’s enduring support and love over the years, noting that GhanaFest® has long served as a vital platform for connection, tradition, and cultural education.

While the cancellation is certainly a blow to many who look forward to the festival as a highlight of the summer season, the GNC remains hopeful for the future. “We are hopeful for a future gathering where we can once again come together to honor our traditions and the vibrant culture of Ghana,” the statement concluded.

Community members are encouraged to stay connected with the GNC for updates and future announcements.
