Attorney Ben Crump Responds to Department of Justice Investigation Into Fulton County Jail (Atlanta, GA.) – Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump and co-counsel Michael Harper have released a statement in response to the U.S. Department of Justice’s announcement today that they will be opening an investigation into the Fulton County Jail where Lashawn Thompson died.
Thompson died after three months in Fulton County Jail, where he was housed in the psychiatric wing of the jail due to his diagnosed mental health issues. Thompson’s cell was found in deplorable conditions and he had insect bites in his ears, mouth, nose, and all over his body.

“While nothing can undo the injustice that Lashawn Thompson faced, it is a tragedy that can hopefully amount to much needed change inside of the Fulton County Jail. It is our prayer that the DOJ confirms the clear pattern of negligence and abuse that happens in Fulton County and swiftly ends it so that no other family experiences this devastation. We thank Attorney General Garland and Assistant Attorney General Clarke for hearing Lashawn’s family’s cries for justice and opening this investigation.”
