Southland Black Chamber and Governor Pritzker Talk Black Beauty Supply (Markham, IL) – While in Markham, Governor J.B. Pritzker spoke at a press conference highlighting the 4 pillars that the Illinois Black Caucus successfully passed, reforming the following areas of concern: criminal justice, education, health care, and economic equality.

Another important piece of legislation that was talked about during this press conference is a disparity study, which is to be conducted by the Illinois Department of Economic Opportunity, that will determine the disparities that exist in the Black beauty supply industry. As far as The Southland Journal is able to ascertain, this is the first bill of it’s kind in the nation.

“This is historic,” said Southland Black Chamber of Commerce president & CEO Dr. Cornel Darden Jr. “When I was approached by Black Kiss Beauty Supply in Matteson, I was dismayed at the wanton discrimination they were experiencing in attempting to purchase products from wholesalers.” According to Darden, he reached out to State Representative Debbie Meyers-Martin (D-Olympia Fields) with his concerns. “She immediately met with us to discuss the issues that Black Kiss was facing. She heard their story and went to work.”
