Aaron Del Mar Returns as Cook County GOP Chairman After Overwhelming Vote (Chicago, IL) — In a decisive move, the Cook County Republican Central Committee elected Palatine Township committeeman Aaron Del Mar as its new chairman during a meeting in Edison Park on Tuesday night. Del Mar, a longtime figure in Illinois Republican politics, secured more than 85% of the weighted vote, marking a strong return to the position he previously held from 2012 to 2016.
Del Mar steps into the role following the resignation of Sean Morrison, who led the county GOP for nearly a decade. Currently serving as the State Central Committeeman for the 5th Congressional District and formerly co-chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, Del Mar brings significant experience back to the helm.
“I am honored to be chosen by my peers to serve as the Cook County Chairman again,” Del Mar said after his election. “I look forward to making significant gains in Cook County and pushing back against the ultra-progressive administrations of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Toni Preckwinkle.”
Del Mar also paid tribute to his predecessor, adding, “I would like to thank Chairman Morrison for his hard work and dedication to the party for almost a decade and his strong commitment to the Cook County Republican Party.”
With one year left in Morrison’s term, Del Mar plans to focus on strengthening the party’s infrastructure, recruiting candidates for both countywide offices and legislative races, and building a strong fundraising operation. He emphasized party unity and voter engagement as key strategies to challenging Democratic dominance in the county.
As the Republican Party eyes the 2026 election cycle, Del Mar’s leadership is expected to shape the GOP’s message and mobilization efforts across the county.
