25th Ward Aldermanic Candidate Ian Watkins Pledges 10% of Salary to Legal Aid Fund for Families Affected by ICE Detentions (Chicago, IL) – Ian Watkins, a community advocate and candidate for alderman of Chicago’s 25th Ward, announced a campaign pledge to donate 10% of his annual aldermanic salary to a privately administered community trust that would provide legal assistance and emergency support for families impacted by immigration enforcement actions if he is elected.
Watkins, a longtime Pilsen resident and former congressional speechwriter, said the proposal reflects his broader campaign platform focused on service, accessibility and accountability. His campaign is centered on affordable housing, anti-displacement efforts, public safety through prevention and mental health initiatives, food security, environmental justice, youth opportunities, immigrant protections and support for local businesses.
Under the proposal, the community trust would help families secure legal representation, navigate immigration proceedings, cover emergency household expenses and connect with community resources during periods of detention or family separation.
“Across our neighborhoods, families are living with uncertainty,” Watkins said. “When a parent is taken into detention, the consequences ripple through an entire household. Children lose stability. Families lose income. Communities lose peace of mind. Leadership demands more than compassionate words, it demands personal responsibility. That’s why I’m committing a portion of my own salary to ensuring our neighbors are not left to face these moments alone.”
Watkins said his campaign is rooted in years of community involvement throughout Pilsen and Little Village, including neighborhood cleanups, immigration justice demonstrations, small business events, cultural celebrations, community resource distributions and public forums. He also participated in the NAACP People’s Climate Summit, joining discussions on environmental justice, labor and civil rights issues.
“My campaign has never been about occupying an office,” Watkins said. “It’s about showing up for people long before Election Day and continuing to show up long afterward. The government should be present in people’s lives when they need it most. People shouldn’t have to wait to be heard. Our neighbors deserve leadership that listens, acts, and stands beside them every single day.”
Before entering government and nonprofit work, Watkins worked in entertainment public relations representing artists, cultural institutions and international events. He later served as a congressional speechwriter and communications professional before continuing his work in community organizing and advocacy.
Watkins described his vision for the 25th Ward as one that prioritizes affordability, inclusion and long-term community investment.
“The 25th Ward has always been defined by the people who built it: immigrants, workers, artists, entrepreneurs, and families who looked after one another,” Watkins said. “I believe every family deserves the opportunity not only to live here, but to grow here, stay here, and thrive here.
