DuPage County Sheriff’s Office Warns Residents About Law Enforcement Impersonation Scams (Wheaton, IL) – The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to remain alert as scammers continue targeting people by posing as law enforcement officers and other government officials in an effort to steal money.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, scammers frequently claim to be deputies with the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office or representatives of another law enforcement agency. In many cases, the callers use the names of real government employees to appear legitimate.
Authorities said the scammers typically demand immediate payment while falsely claiming the victim has failed to report for jury duty, has an outstanding arrest warrant, missed a court appearance or subpoena, or has a family member who has been arrested and needs bond money.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that these claims are fraudulent and urged residents not to provide money or personal information to unsolicited callers.
Officials reminded the public that law enforcement agencies will never contact individuals by phone, text message or email demanding immediate payment to avoid arrest or resolve a legal matter.
Anyone who receives one of these calls is encouraged to hang up immediately and report the incident to their local law enforcement agency. Residents should also avoid sharing personal or financial information with unknown callers claiming to represent a government agency.
