DuPage County Sheriff’s Office Joins Statewide Labor Day Traffic Safety Campaign (Wheaton, IL) – The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office will join more than 200 law enforcement agencies across Illinois in a statewide Labor Day traffic safety campaign focused on impaired driving, seat belt enforcement and other dangerous driving behaviors.
The enforcement effort will run from Aug. 14 through the early morning hours of Sept. 8 as part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High. Get a DUI” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns.
DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick said deputies will take a zero-tolerance approach to impaired driving during the enforcement period.
“Driving under the influence — whether it’s alcohol, cannabis or any other impairing drug — is not just risky, it’s illegal,” Mendrick said. “We’ll be patrolling with zero tolerance for impaired driving, because our goal is to protect the people of DuPage County.”
In addition to alcohol-impaired drivers, officers will be watching for motorists under the influence of cannabis and other drugs. The statewide campaign combines public education with increased enforcement in an effort to reduce crashes and save lives.
Deputies will also enforce Illinois’ seat belt laws as part of the “Click It or Ticket” initiative. Law enforcement officials remind motorists that wearing a seat belt is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious injury or death in a crash.
Drivers and passengers are encouraged to buckle up on every trip, regardless of whether they are sitting in the front or back seat.
“We want our community to enjoy the holiday weekend safely and responsibly,” Mendrick said. “Plan ahead, use a designated driver, and never get behind the wheel impaired. These decisions save lives.”
The DuPage County enforcement effort is part of a larger statewide campaign supported by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The department administers the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” initiatives using federal highway safety funds.
The campaign is also supported by IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” media campaign, which is running across radio, television and digital platforms to emphasize the potentially deadly consequences of impaired driving.
