Cook County Commissioner Sean Morrison’s Statement on the U.S. Department of Justice’s Lawsuit against the State of Illinois, Cook County, and the City of Chicago – As the Cook County Commissioner for the 17th District, I find it deeply troubling that the U.S. Department of Justice has found it necessary to file a lawsuit against Illinois, Cook County, and the City of Chicago over their sanctuary policies. This legal action underscores a significant failure in cooperation between local and federal authorities, particularly concerning the removal of criminal illegal migrants from our communities.
The primary responsibility of any government is to ensure the safety and security of its citizens. By not aligning with federal immigration enforcement efforts, our local jurisdictions are inadvertently allowing undocumented individuals who have committed crimes to remain on our streets. This not only endangers our residents but also undermines the rule of law.
The Illinois Trust Act and Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance, have created barriers that prevent federal agencies from effectively enforcing immigration laws. This lack of cooperation is counterproductive and poses a threat to public safety.
It is imperative that our local and state leaders reassess these policies and work collaboratively with federal authorities. Our shared goal should be the protection of our residents and the maintenance of public safety. By aligning our policies with federal efforts, we can ensure that those who break our laws are held accountable and removed from our communities.
The lawsuit initiated by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences of non-cooperation. It is unfortunate that it has come to this point, but it also presents an opportunity for us to correct course and prioritize the safety of our citizens.
I call upon my colleagues and leaders at all levels of government to put aside political differences and focus on our fundamental duty: protecting the people we serve. By working together, we can create a safer environment for all residents of Cook County and beyond.
