Federal Court Order Restores Funding for CTA Red Line Projects (Chicago, IL) – Funding for two major Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) rail projects has been restored following a federal court order, allowing construction to continue without disruption after months of uncertainty.

CTA officials announced that a U.S. District Court judge issued a Temporary Restraining Order earlier this week directing the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to lift a suspension on project funding that had been in place since October 2025. The order took effect Friday, March 27.

With the restriction removed, the FTA has reopened its reimbursement portal, enabling the CTA to immediately resume submitting project expenses. The agency has already submitted $114.5 million in invoices and expects to receive payment within standard processing timelines, likely next week.

The funding supports two critical infrastructure efforts: the long-anticipated Red Line Extension (RLE) and the ongoing Red & Purple Modernization (RPM) project.

CTA Acting President Nora Leerhsen said the decision marks a major step forward for the Red Line Extension, a project that has been in development for decades.

“Today’s news means that the Red Line Extension project is truly full steam ahead,” Leerhsen said. “For 50 years, Chicagoans have fought for this project, and today’s development is the latest success story in CTA’s commitment to making this project a reality.”

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also praised the ruling, emphasizing the broader impact on underserved communities.

“Today we celebrate that justice has been brought to residents of the Far South Side and all of Chicago,” Johnson said. “The Red Line Extension will connect long-waiting communities with the opportunity and beauty of Chicago while bringing Far South Side residents increased access to employment and educational opportunities.”

The funding pause had raised concerns about potential work stoppages on both projects, which are considered vital to improving transit access and reliability across the city. CTA officials said they remain committed to completing both the RLE and RPM projects without further interruption.
