DuPage County Law Enforcement Steps Up Distracted Driving Enforcement in April (Wheaton, IL) – Law enforcement agencies across DuPage County and the state of Illinois are increasing patrols throughout April as part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, officials announced.
The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and local police departments to crack down on drivers using phones and other electronic devices behind the wheel. The enforcement campaign will target behaviors such as texting, using social media, and watching videos while driving.
“Distracted driving puts everyone at risk, and even a quick glance at a phone can have devastating consequences,” said DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick. “During April, officers will be looking for distracted driving violations and reminding motorists to put the phone away and focus on the road.”
Officials emphasized that drivers who need to send a message, check directions or make a call should pull over and park in a safe location before using their devices.
Under Illinois law, manually using an electronic communication device while driving is illegal. Violators can face fines and other penalties as part of the state’s “Put the Phone Away or Pay” campaign.
The enforcement effort is funded through federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
