Illinois Department of Innovation & Technology Hosts Careerspark Steam Expo for Students (Springfield, IL) – More than 1,800 eighth grade students from across Illinois gathered in Springfield this week for the third annual CareerSpark STEAM Expo, an event designed to introduce young learners to careers in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
Hosted by the Illinois Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT) in partnership with Junior Achievement of Central Illinois and the Learning Technology Center, the two-day event on April 14–15 featured nearly 60 exhibitors representing state agencies, businesses, nonprofit organizations, colleges and universities.
Organizers said the expo aims to give students hands-on exposure to a wide range of career paths while connecting classroom learning to real-world applications.
“CareerSpark gives students a chance to explore STEAM careers in a way that feels accessible and exciting,” said DoIT Acting Secretary and State Chief Information Officer Brandon Ragle. “Our goal is for students to experiment, ask questions, and see innovation up close so they can see the wide range of paths available to them and how their skills can translate into in-demand careers.”
Throughout the event, students interacted with professionals and participated in demonstrations showcasing emerging technologies and creative problem-solving. Officials said the experience is intended to help students better understand future career opportunities and build confidence as they plan their academic and professional paths.
Junior Achievement of Central Illinois President Mary Pille emphasized the importance of early exposure to career options.
“When students have the chance to explore careers through hands-on experiences, it helps them see what’s possible and start building confidence in their future,” Pille said. “We’re grateful to work alongside organizations that share our commitment to preparing the next generation for success.”
State officials say the expo continues to grow each year and reflects Illinois’ broader efforts to strengthen its workforce pipeline by investing in innovation and education initiatives.
