State Rep. McLaughlin Urges 52nd District Communities to Register for PFAS Settlement Program Before July 15 Deadline (Lake Barrington, IL) — State Rep. Martin McLaughlin, R-Barrington Hills, is encouraging municipalities and other eligible communities across Illinois’ 52nd House District to register for a PFAS settlement program before the July 15 deadline.

The program is part of a multidistrict litigation (MDL) settlement involving manufacturers accused of contaminating drinking water with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS or “forever chemicals.” These chemicals have been linked to environmental contamination and can persist in water supplies and the environment for long periods.

Several companies, including 3M, DuPont, Chemours, and Tyco Fire Products, have entered into multibillion-dollar settlement agreements related to allegations that their products contributed to PFAS contamination in public drinking water systems. Eligible municipalities and public water systems may qualify to participate in the settlement by registering before the July 15 deadline.

McLaughlin said local governments should take advantage of the opportunity to review the program and determine whether they are eligible to file claims.

Protecting our water and our environment is a responsibility we all share,” McLaughlin said. “I encourage every eligible community in the 52nd District to review this program and complete the registration process before the July 15 deadline.”

McLaughlin pointed to his previous environmental initiatives while serving as chairman of the Barrington Area Council of Governments (BACOG) and later as mayor of Barrington Hills. During that time, he worked with regional leaders to phase out the use of certain coal tar-based sealcoating products because of concerns about their environmental impact on local waterways.

The lawmaker said the PFAS settlement program represents another opportunity for communities to address environmental concerns while helping protect public health. He urged local officials throughout the district to complete the registration process before it closes on July 15.

Local municipalities are urged to contact Rep. McLaughlin’s office to see if they are eligible to claim a part of the proceeds from the lawsuit.
