Illinois Democrats Accuse GOP Lawmakers of Taking Credit for First Responder Grants They Voted Against (Springfield, IL) – The Democratic Party of Illinois is accusing several Republican state lawmakers of taking credit for grant funding that they previously voted against in the Illinois General Assembly.
In a statement, the party said multiple Republican legislators have promoted more than $1.7 million in Small Equipment Grants awarded to fire departments and emergency responders in their districts after opposing the state budget measures that included the funding.
“Repeatedly, Republican legislators tout community investments, despite voting against them,” Democratic Party of Illinois spokesperson Gwen Pepin said. “It’s difficult to justify why an elected official would try to block funds to fire departments and first responders—the very people who help keep their constituents safe.”
The Small Equipment Grant Program provides funding to fire departments and emergency response agencies for equipment intended to improve emergency preparedness and public safety.
According to the Democratic Party of Illinois, the following Republican lawmakers voted against the funding before later announcing or celebrating grants awarded to their districts:
- State Sen. Neil Anderson (R-Andalusia) highlighted nearly $520,000 in combined Small Equipment Grants in April 2025 and June 2026 after voting against the funding measures on both occasions.
- State Sen. Jil Tracy (R-Quincy) announced more than $370,000 in grants for communities in her district in June 2026 after voting against the funding.
- State Rep. David Friess (R-Red Bud) promoted more than $164,000 in grants awarded to his district despite opposing the measure.
- State Rep. Regan Deering (R-Decatur) celebrated more than $77,000 in grants after voting against the funding.
- State Rep. Charlie Meier (R-Okawville) announced grant awards for his district after opposing the legislation.
- State Sen. Erica Harriss (R-Glen Carbon) promoted at least $321,000 in grants in 2025 and 2026 after voting against the funding both years.
- State Rep. Jason Bunting (R-Emington) highlighted at least $262,539 in grant awards after voting against the funding twice.
- State Rep. Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) promoted grant funding for his district in April 2025 after voting against the measure.
The Democratic Party argued that the lawmakers’ local announcements acknowledge the importance of the grants while conflicting with their votes in Springfield.
Republican lawmakers have generally argued that votes against state budgets or appropriations bills reflect broader concerns over overall state spending and fiscal priorities rather than opposition to individual grant programs.
The dispute reflects a recurring partisan debate in Illinois over whether legislators should promote local projects funded through spending packages they opposed during the legislative process.
