Cook County Sheriff’s Office Warns Public About Phone Scam (Cook County, IL) – The Cook County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving callers who falsely identify themselves as members of the Sheriff’s Office and demand payment for citations.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the scam calls come from numbers without caller ID. The department emphasized that it does not call residents to request payments or notify individuals about citations, warrants or missed jury duty.
Residents who receive a call from someone claiming to represent law enforcement are advised to obtain the caller’s full name, badge number and phone number. However, residents should not follow the caller’s instructions or use a phone number provided during the call.
Instead, the Sheriff’s Office recommends contacting the appropriate law enforcement agency using a phone number listed on its official website to determine whether there is a legitimate reason for the contact.
