14,000 Pounds of Food to Help South Suburban Families Recovering From Tornado Damage (Hazel Crest, IL) – Hundreds of families in Hazel Crest and neighboring south suburban communities impacted by recent tornado damage are set to receive food and other essential supplies through a community relief effort bringing together local officials, faith organizations and nonprofit groups.

The Village of Hazel Crest is partnering with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Unity Partnership NFP, DuPage AME Church, the Sarah Allen Women’s Missionary Society and the Dr. King MLK Unity Project to assist residents as recovery continues in Hazel Crest, Homewood, Markham and Harvey.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is donating approximately 14,000 pounds of food for the effort. Organizers say the distribution is intended to help households dealing with the financial and personal impact of storm damage.

“When disaster impacts one of our communities, it impacts all of us,” Hazel Crest Mayor Sandra Alexander said. “We are incredibly grateful to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Unity Partnership, DuPage AME Church, the Sarah Allen Women’s Missionary Society, the Dr. King MLK Unity Project, and everyone who has stepped forward to help our families.”

Alexander said the size of the donation represents more than immediate material assistance.

“Fourteen thousand pounds of food represents more than a donation—it represents compassion, partnership, and neighbors coming together to remind those affected by the tornado that they are not alone,” she said.

The community food giveaway is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Village of Hazel Crest Senior Building, located at the Police Department at 3000 W. 170th Place.

Food will be available to residents of Hazel Crest, Homewood, Markham and Harvey. Additional donated supplies, including clothing, toiletries and gift cards, will also be provided specifically to Hazel Crest families who were displaced by the tornado.

Organizers are also seeking volunteers to help prepare and pack food boxes ahead of the distribution.

Volunteer opportunities are available Monday, Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Tuesday, Aug. 25, from noon to 4 p.m.

Village officials said the relief effort reflects a broader community response to the tornado damage, with churches, nonprofit organizations, volunteers and donors working together to support affected residents.

Hazel Crest officials expressed appreciation to the organizations and individuals contributing to the recovery effort and encouraged community members to participate wherever possible.
