Preston Announces $60,000 Literacy Grant for Organization in Illinois’ 16th District (Chicago, IL) – Adults in Illinois’ 16th Senate District will have access to expanded literacy services through a new $60,000 grant announced by State Sen. Willie Preston.
Preston said Touch Gift, an organization serving the district, will use the adult literacy grant to strengthen its programming and provide additional instruction and volunteer training.
The funding is part of more than $28 million in grants awarded through the Illinois Secretary of State to support libraries and literacy programs throughout the state.
“Literacy is the foundation for everything: a good job, financial independence, being able to help your kids with homework,” said Preston, D-Chicago. “This $60,000 grant means that more adults in our district will get the one-on-one instruction they need to build those skills.”
The Touch Gift grant will focus on adults who read below a ninth-grade level or who have beginning-level English language skills. Participants will be able to receive instruction in basic reading, writing, mathematics and English proficiency.
Preston said the investment will help address barriers that can affect adults’ employment opportunities, financial stability and ability to support their families.
“I’m proud to see this investment in our community, and I’ll keep fighting for the resources our libraries and literacy programs need to serve every family in the Sweet 16th District,” Preston said.
The statewide grant program is supporting a broad range of library and literacy services. Funding can be used to improve online library catalogs, assist with daily operations and expand interlibrary loan services.
The grants also support radio information services that provide news and other information to people who are unable to read standard print materials.
Adult, family and workplace literacy programs funded through the initiative are designed to strengthen foundational skills in reading, mathematics, writing and English.
Preston said continued investment in these programs is important as communities work to expand educational opportunities and improve access to resources for residents of all ages.
A complete list of organizations receiving funding across Illinois is available through the Illinois Secretary of State.
