Illinois Opens Winter Heating Assistance Applications for Seniors, Disabled, and Families with Young Children — As temperatures begin to drop across Illinois, eligible households can now apply for financial assistance to help cover their winter heating bills through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
Nicor Gas and state agencies are urging early applicants to take advantage of the program, which is currently open for priority groups. Eligible applicants during this initial phase include:
-
Adults age 60 and older
-
Individuals with disabilities
-
Families with at least one child age five or younger
-
Households facing utility disconnection or that have received a disconnection notice for within the next seven days
LIHEAP is designed to help vulnerable households manage rising winter energy costs and maintain access to essential heating services. With household expenses continuing to climb, utility providers emphasize that the program is a vital but often underutilized resource, as eligibility criteria are broader than many residents realize. For instance, a family of four earning up to $99,000 annually can qualify for assistance.
While applications are currently restricted to these priority groups, the program will open to all other income-eligible Illinois households beginning Nov. 1.
Nicor Gas and other energy providers encourage customers to explore their options and seek help before the heaviest winter heating bills arrive. In addition to LIHEAP, providers often offer supplementary bill-payment assistance and energy-saving programs.
For complete eligibility details and application instructions, residents can visit the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s utility bill assistance page or call 1-833-711-0374.
