Free Vehicle Light Repairs Reach 1,000 Cook County Motorists Through Lightsaver Program (Cook County, IL) — A program that replaces burned-out vehicle lights for free has helped its 1,000th Cook County motorist, reaching the milestone at an October 23 event at the Palos Hills Community Center.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Office Vehicle Services Unit assisted the driver through Lightsaver, a countywide initiative designed to improve roadway safety and address equipment problems before they lead to traffic stops.
Sheriff Thomas J. Dart’s office estimates the program has saved participating motorists a combined $500,000 in repair expenses, tickets and court costs.
Lightsaver replaces headlights, taillights and license plate lights at no charge during events held throughout the county. The service addresses a maintenance problem that can leave drivers facing expenses beyond the cost of a replacement bulb.
The program focuses strictly on driver safety and community trust. Attending will not trigger a background check, a driver’s license review, or a search for active warrants.
“If someone has a broken light, why wait until it becomes a reason for a traffic stop?” Dart said. “We can replace the light, make the car safer, save vehicle owners money, and let our officers focus their time on other public safety needs.”
Dart launched the countywide program in August 2021 after data showed that approximately 20 percent of Sheriff’s Police traffic stops involved vehicle equipment violations, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The initiative takes a preventive approach, helping motorists correct a problem before it becomes an enforcement matter. For drivers, that means an opportunity to maintain their vehicles without paying for the light replacement or risking additional costs associated with an equipment violation.
The Sheriff’s Office holds multiple Lightsaver events each year. Cook County motorists interested in the free service can register through the office’s vehicle light replacement webpage.
