Mayor Billy McKinney Urges Zion Residents to Exercise Their Right to Vote and Stop by an Election Night Party at Violet’s in Zion (Zion, IL) — Presidential elections tend to bring out the highest voter participation rates, but local elections have more impact on the daily lives of citizens which is why Zion Mayor Billy McKinney is encouraging residents to vote on Nov. 3rd.
“Local elections influence neighborhood priorities, housing, public health, infrastructure and opportunities for young people,” McKinney said. “When turnout is low, elected leaders hear from a narrower slice of the community. Stronger participation helps ensure that more residents and neighborhoods are represented in decisions about Zion’s future.”
McKinney said his work as mayor is illustrative of what community involvement can accomplish. Some of the projects he has worked on include helping secure annual compensation for Zion related to hosting spent nuclear fuel, restoring blighted properties, and reviving community cleanup days. Other essential community initiatives include improving water infrastructure, supporting local COVID 19 testing and vaccination efforts, and backing youth mentorship and community partnerships.
Who we have representing us at the local level is important,” McKinney said. “Zion’s future belongs to the people who call this city home. Make a plan to vote, encourage your neighbors to participate.”
Then after voting, McKinney said he is inviting residents to gather at Violets in Zion to connect with neighbors and take part in a community celebration on Election night. The event will be an opportunity to recognize civic participation and encourage residents to stay engaged in the life of the city.
“Join us at Violets on election night as we celebrate the voices that make our community strong,” McKinney said. “This event is intended to complement, not replace, voting. Residents should plan ahead, find reliable information about polling locations and hours, and cast their ballots through official voting channels. Every voice matter, and every vote helps shape what comes next for Zion. Let’s make sure every neighborhood is part of the conversation.”
