CHA Stakeholders Demand HUD Review Over Ald. Burnett’s Conflicts of Interest (Chicago, IL) – Chicago Housing Authority stakeholders are demanding federal intervention after raising concerns about what they describe as serious conflicts of interest involving longtime Ald. Walter Burnett (27th).

The group says Burnett’s role as a landlord to tenants using Section 8 vouchers, while holding political influence over housing policy, represents an unacceptable overlap of personal profit and public duty.

According to stakeholders, officials from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) have previously advised against appointing Burnett to housing-related posts because of such conflicts. “Walter Burnett cannot profit from CHA residents while claiming to represent them,” the group said in a statement. “This is a direct betrayal of the public trust, and HUD’s own findings show that he is unfit to hold any position related to housing policy or development.”

The criticism also extends to Burnett’s past involvement in the redevelopment of Atrium Village, a mixed-income project on the Near North Side. Stakeholders argue that the redevelopment deals, backed by Burnett and developers, displaced numerous CHA families under the guise of revitalization while benefiting private investors.

The coalition of stakeholders is calling for several steps, including barring Burnett from all housing-related appointments, opening an independent probe into his financial ties to Section 8 and redevelopment projects, and reviewing Atrium Village agreements for their impact on displaced families.

They are also requesting a direct meeting with HUD Secretary Scott Turner to discuss their concerns and push for stronger protections for CHA residents.
