Illinois Democrats Blame Trump for Rising Gas Prices Amid Ongoing Iran War (Springfield, IL) – The Democratic Party of Illinois is blaming President Donald Trump for rising gas prices and increased costs for consumers, arguing that the administration’s ongoing military conflict with Iran has placed additional financial burdens on Illinois families.
According to a statement released Tuesday by the party, the average price of gasoline in Illinois has increased by 11 cents over the past week, reaching $4.17 per gallon, citing data from AAA. The party also said the national average has climbed above $4.00 per gallon.
The Democratic Party of Illinois contends that the conflict with Iran has contributed to higher fuel prices and increased government spending. In its statement, the party claimed Illinois families have paid an additional $455 in higher gasoline costs since the conflict began and cited estimates that the war has cost American taxpayers up to $100 billion, or approximately $1,100 per household.
The release also stated that 18 U.S. servicemembers have been killed during the conflict, referring to it as a “war of choice.”
Democratic Party of Illinois Chair Lisa Hernandez criticized the president’s handling of the conflict and its economic impact.
“Donald Trump has the power to end his deadly and costly war with Iran, which continues to claim the lives of U.S. servicemembers and send prices soaring — yet he chooses not to,” Hernandez said. “As a result, Illinois working families are forced to dip into their savings and stretch their budgets to afford the high prices at the pump and at the grocery store.”
Hernandez also contrasted the administration’s actions with state policies, noting that Illinois suspended this year’s automatic inflation adjustment to the state’s motor fuel tax.
“In Illinois, we eliminated this year’s gas tax inflation to give working families some relief at the pump,” Hernandez said. “The contrast couldn’t be clearer: While Trump doesn’t care about ending this war or lowering costs, Democrats are doing everything in our power to make everyday life more affordable for Illinois families.”
The White House has defended its policies regarding Iran and energy markets, while analysts note that gasoline prices are influenced by multiple factors, including global oil markets, refinery capacity, seasonal demand and geopolitical events.
