Illinois Democrats Criticize GOP Members of Congress Over ICE Funding Vote (Springfield, IL) – The Democratic Party of Illinois is criticizing three Republican members of Illinois’ congressional delegation after they voted in favor of legislation that includes billions of dollars in funding for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In a statement released following the vote, Democratic Party of Illinois Chair Lisa Hernandez targeted U.S. Reps. Mike Bost, Mary Miller and Darin LaHood, arguing that the measure expands funding for immigration enforcement while placing additional costs on taxpayers.
“Illinois Democrats saw firsthand how Donald Trump’s immigration agenda tore apart families, shot people, and killed others,” Hernandez said in a statement. “Instead of having a backbone, the ILGOP, including Mary Miller, Darin LaHood and Mike Bost, are showing that they stand behind inhumane policies—and will make taxpayers foot the bill.”
Hernandez also argued that federal lawmakers should focus more attention on economic issues affecting working families.
“Meanwhile, Illinois Democrats hear every day how Trump’s economy is squeezing working people,” she said. “Lowering costs should be the GOP’s priority.”
The legislation, which passed the U.S. House, includes funding for immigration enforcement and border security initiatives. Supporters of the measure have argued the funding is necessary to strengthen immigration enforcement, enhance border security operations and address challenges facing federal immigration agencies.
The comments reflect the continuing divide between Democrats and Republicans over immigration policy, enforcement priorities and federal spending. Immigration remains one of the most contentious issues in national politics, with lawmakers debating the balance between border security, enforcement efforts and humanitarian concerns.
Bost, Miller and LaHood have generally supported stricter immigration enforcement policies and increased border security measures during their time in Congress.
