Illinois Democrats Criticizes Trump, Republicans Over Health Care Costs (Springfield, IL) – The Democratic Party of Illinois is accusing President Donald Trump and Republican members of Congress from Illinois of contributing to rising health care costs and declining insurance coverage as the party prepares to make affordability a central issue heading into the November elections.
In a statement released Friday, Democratic Party of Illinois Chair Lisa Hernandez argued that Illinois families are facing higher expenses for health insurance while federal policies have reduced access to coverage.
The party said nearly 100,000 Illinois residents lost or dropped their health insurance after enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits expired. Democrats also pointed to preliminary 2027 insurance filings showing proposed premium increases of at least 15% nationwide.
Hernandez specifically criticized U.S. Reps. Mary Miller, Darin LaHood and Mike Bost, saying Republicans had failed to deliver on promises to make health care and other household expenses more affordable.
“Trump and Mary Miller, Darin LaHood, and Mike Bost broke their promise to make life more affordable and have handed working families health care costs they simply cannot afford,” Hernandez said.
She also linked higher costs to the Trump administration’s policies, including its approach to Iran, and accused Republicans of prioritizing wealthy Americans over working families.
The Democratic Party of Illinois said the health care debate will become an issue for voters in November, framing the election as a choice between Republican policies and Democratic proposals focused on reducing costs and maintaining coverage.
“Come November, Illinoisans will have a choice: more of the Illinois Republicans’ health care disaster, or Democrats who will fight to lower costs, protect coverage, and put families first,” Hernandez said.
The statements represent the Democratic Party of Illinois’ characterization of the impact of federal health care policy. The release did not include responses from Miller, LaHood or Bost to the allegations.
