Illinois DoIT Honored for Public Safety Technology Innovation (Springfield, IL) – The Illinois Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT) has been recognized nationally for its role in using technology to improve roadway safety.
The department’s “Move Over Illinois! Real-time Emergency Alerts Mapping and Navigation” initiative received a 2025 Government Experience Project Award from the Center for Digital Government, which highlights innovative programs that enhance how residents interact with government.
Launched in 2024 in partnership with Google and the Illinois State Police, the project integrates emergency alerts into the Waze navigation app, providing drivers with timely notifications about crashes, hazards, and other critical incidents. Officials say the alerts improve driver awareness, support first responders, and reduce the risk of roadside crashes.
“This recognition is a meaningful reminder that our efforts are making a real difference in the lives of first responders and those who share the road with them,” said Brandon Ragle, acting secretary of DoIT and the state’s chief information officer. “It’s rewarding to see technology directly helping to protect lives and support those who keep our communities safe.”
Illinois was one of 41 governments honored this year. The award marks the state as a leader in applying digital tools to improve safety and public service.
Illinois State Police Director Brendan F. Kelly emphasized the importance of the partnership, noting that real-time alerts give drivers the chance to react before approaching dangerous scenes.
“The advance warning gives people time to slow down and move over, reducing the risk of a crash for both drivers and our Troopers,” Kelly said.
DoIT Acting Assistant Secretary and Deputy CIO Chris Britten credited the department’s team with bringing the project to life. “We’ve created a practical solution that improves how emergency information is shared and helps protect the people we serve,” Britten said.
The Government Experience Awards, now in their ninth year, recognize state and local governments nationwide that are blending service design with modern technology to better connect with residents.
