Meyers-Martin Highlights Affordability Measures, Budget Priorities Following Legislative Session (Springfield, IL) – State Rep. Debbie Meyers-Martin, D-Olympia Fields, is highlighting legislation aimed at reducing costs for consumers and supporting local communities following the conclusion of the Illinois General Assembly’s spring legislative session.

Meyers-Martin said affordability remained a central focus throughout the session as lawmakers worked to address rising costs facing Illinois families.

“Rising costs are a challenge for families nationwide, and it’s critical we take strong steps within our control here in Illinois to make a difference,” Meyers-Martin said. “Affordability has been a primary focus for me, and it’s reflected in the legislation we’ve prioritized.”

As chair of the House Consumer Protection Committee, Meyers-Martin helped advance several measures designed to increase consumer protections and reduce household expenses.

Among the proposals she highlighted were legislation to freeze the state gas tax and establish a sales tax holiday, expand access to digital coupons so consumers receive advertised discounts regardless of technology access, strengthen protections against artificial intelligence systems that use personal data to influence pricing, increase transparency surrounding hidden fees, curb certain insurance rate increases and expand eligibility for home energy assistance programs.

Meyers-Martin also pointed to the state budget approved by lawmakers, which includes increased funding for K-12 education, safety net hospitals, after-school programs and community-based violence prevention initiatives.

The spending plan also fully funds the Local Government Distributive Fund (LGDF), which provides municipalities with a share of state income tax revenue. Supporters argue the funding helps local governments maintain services while reducing pressure to increase property taxes.

“Our budget reflects our values, and this plan delivers needed support to our communities,” Meyers-Martin said. “It reflects responsible choices through a human-centered lens and will help our state address challenges facing families today and moving forward.”

With the legislative session concluded, Meyers-Martin said she plans to spend the coming months meeting with constituents throughout the district to discuss issues important to local residents and gather feedback ahead of future legislative work.
