Midwest Underground Railroad Network to Celebrate Underground Railroad Month in September (South Holland, IL) – The Midwest Underground Railroad Network (MURN) will join organizations across the country in marking September as Underground Railroad Month, a national observance established by the National Park Service to honor freedom seekers and those who aided them.

Throughout the month, MURN will host a slate of events across the region, highlighting the history and legacy of the Underground Railroad in Illinois and Indiana. Programs will include walking and bus tours of authentic sites, presentations by scholars and community leaders, and special events in Bronzeville, the south suburbs, and northern Indiana.

As part of Cook County’s Racial Equity Week, which runs September 8–12, MURN will also present a program for county employees under the theme “Racial Equity in Action: Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future.”

“Underground Railroad Month is an opportunity to honor the stories of freedom seekers and others who risked everything in the pursuit of freedom,” said Tom Shepherd of MURN. “We’re excited to engage families, students, and the broader public through powerful storytelling and meaningful experiences of those who sought freedom and those who helped here in the Midwest.”

Headquartered in South Holland, MURN is a volunteer nonprofit dedicated to preserving and promoting Underground Railroad history throughout the Midwest. The group partners with educators, historians, preservationists, and community organizations to ensure this chapter of American history is remembered and shared with future generations.
