Northwestern Medicine Expands Huntley Campus With New 80,000-Square-Foot Outpatient Center (Huntley, IL) — Northwestern Medicine has officially opened the doors to a sprawling new outpatient center on its Huntley Hospital campus, a major expansion aimed at bringing highly specialized medical care closer to home for residents of McHenry County and the surrounding region.

The new 80,000-square-foot facility, located at 10390 Haligus Road, significantly broadens the hospital’s existing cardiovascular, surgical, and oncology programs while introducing several entirely new medical specialties to the Huntley campus.

Among the new services now available are gastroenterology, palliative care, radiation oncology, and pulmonary medicine through the Canning Thoracic Institute. Gynecological oncology is slated to join the facility’s offerings in 2027.

“This expansion represents our continued commitment to bringing world-class specialty care closer to where our patients live and work,” said Matt Carlen, president of Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital. “Patients will benefit from greater convenience, improved access to physicians and advanced treatment options, all in one location.”

A major focal point of the new building is its dedicated Cancer Center, which effectively doubles the campus’s capacity for cancer treatment. The facility increases the number of medical oncology exam rooms from six to 13 and boosts the number of infusion rooms from eight to 16.

For the first time, patients will also be able to receive radiation oncology and palliative care directly on the Huntley campus. Previously, patients in the northwest suburbs had to travel to the McHenry Hospital Cancer Center for radiation treatments. While the McHenry location will continue to offer those services, the new Huntley facility features a dedicated clinical space with six exam rooms, allowing patients greater geographic flexibility.

“Patients often require multiple types of treatment as part of their cancer journey,” said Dr. Terrence Bugno, a radiation oncologist. “Having radiation oncology available on the Huntley campus enables us to deliver more coordinated care while helping patients avoid unnecessary travel during treatment.”

Dr. Geoffrey Martin, medical director of radiation oncology at both the Huntley and McHenry hospitals, echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the benefits of a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment for patients receiving personalized cancer therapies.

Beyond cancer care, the new medical office building houses the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, urology, general surgery, expanded cardiac diagnostics, and on-site oncology laboratory services. Connected to the main hospital by an enclosed walkway, the outpatient center was designed to provide seamless transitions for patients, physicians, and support staff.

“By expanding cancer, cardiovascular and specialty services in Huntley, we are improving access, reducing wait times and making it easier for patients and families to receive exceptional care in their own community,” said Dr. Patrick Towne, president of the Northwestern Medicine Regional Medical Group.

The expansion is also expected to serve as a local economic driver. Hospital officials estimate the new center will support approximately 300 new jobs over the next three years, including physicians, advanced practice providers, and support staff. They will join the more than 1,330 employees and 300 board-certified physicians already operating on the Huntley campus.

Since Huntley Hospital first opened a decade ago in 2016, it has grown rapidly to meet regional healthcare demands. Earlier this year, U.S. News & World Report ranked the combined Huntley, McHenry, and Woodstock hospitals tied for No. 11 in both Illinois and the Chicago metropolitan area.

“As demand for specialty care continues to grow,” Carlen said, “this facility positions us to meet patients’ needs today and well into the future.”
