OpEd: A Fair Deal on Energy: Calling for Transparency in Illinois Utility Costs (Chicago, IL) – Illinois families are feeling the pinch every time they open their electricity bills. Last year, state regulators approved a $606 million rate hike for ComEd’s revised grid plan, which raises delivery charges on customer bills over four years. According to the Citizens Utility Board, this increase directly impacts the portion of bills that covers the utility’s costs and profits for delivering power, not the electricity itself. For consumers already struggling to make ends meet, this multi-year hike adds to a growing burden that shows little sign of easing.

Illinoisans are tired of being, as one customer put it, “nickled and dimed to death.” Despite repeated promises that higher rates would strengthen the grid or improve service, residents are left wondering where their money is really going. Families can’t keep absorbing these increases while corporations face little accountability.

However, there is something we can do. For example, in Massachusetts, Governor Maura Healey recently called on regulators to conduct a comprehensive review of gas and electric costs to ensure that utilities are held accountable and that consumers come first. Illinois should follow suit. A full and transparent examination of how rates are set and where utility profits go would be a meaningful step toward restoring fairness and trust.

Illinoisans deserve affordable rates, reliable power, and a system that prioritizes people, not profits. It’s time to demand real accountability from the utilities that power our homes and communities.
