Salazar Named Kankakee’s New Deputy Fire Chief (Kankakee, IL) – The City of Kankakee is preparing to appoint longtime firefighter and department leader Christopher A. Salazar as the new deputy chief of the Kankakee Fire Department.
Mayor Christopher W. Curtis, working with Fire Chief Bryan LaRoche, announced the selection this week. Salazar, currently a captain, will be presented to the City Council for approval at its meeting Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Salazar brings 24 years of experience in the fire service, including nearly two decades with the Kankakee Fire Department, where he has served since 2006. Over the years, he has held a wide range of positions, including firefighter/paramedic, lieutenant, captain, shift commander, fire prevention officer and training officer.
“Captain Salazar is a proven leader within the Kankakee Fire Department and throughout the region,” Curtis said. “His experience, professionalism, operational skills and interaction with residents within the community make him the optimal choice for deputy fire chief. We are confident he will continue to strengthen the department and serve our community with integrity and distinction.”
LaRoche echoed that praise, noting Salazar’s reputation among colleagues.
“Captain Salazar is extremely dedicated to the fire service, and he is highly respected among his peers,” LaRoche said. “He is a great fit for the position of deputy chief, and he will do great things to move the fire department forward.”
Salazar holds numerous certifications from the Office of the State Fire Marshal, including advanced firefighter, fire officer II, instructor III, training program manager, fire inspector I, and fire department health and safety officer. He also has multiple technical rescue and hazardous materials certifications.
In addition, Salazar is a licensed paramedic and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Fire Service Administration. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership with a concentration in Fire and Rescue Executive Leadership.
If confirmed by the City Council, Salazar will step into the deputy chief role, helping lead the department’s operations, training, and community safety efforts.
