Governor Pritzker Announces $195 Million Investment from AbbVie to Expand Manufacturing Footprint in Illinois (Chicago, IL) – Pharmaceutical giant AbbVie will invest $195 million to expand its North Chicago manufacturing facility, Gov. JB Pritzker announced Tuesday, in a move expected to boost production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and create high-quality jobs in the region.

The expansion, scheduled to begin construction this fall, will increase AbbVie’s footprint in Illinois, where the company is headquartered and employs more than 11,000 people. As part of the state’s Economic Development for a Growing Economy (EDGE) program, AbbVie has committed to adding at least 50 new full-time jobs within the next three years.

“AbbVie’s decision to expand its manufacturing footprint in Illinois is a testament to our state’s world-class workforce, infrastructure, cutting-edge research institutions, and location that keeps businesses connected to the nation and the world,” Pritzker said.

The project is part of AbbVie’s broader pledge to invest more than $10 billion in U.S. capital projects over the next decade. The North Chicago expansion will support the production of APIs, drug products, peptides, and medical devices, according to AbbVie Chairman and CEO Robert A. Michael.

“This is an important step to maintain U.S. leadership in pharmaceutical innovation and deliver next-generation medicines that make a remarkable impact on patients’ lives,” Michael said.

State officials say the investment reinforces Illinois’ standing as a national leader in advanced manufacturing and the life sciences sector. Kristin Richards, director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, said the expansion “aligns with the state’s vision to attract and retain Illinois companies that are investing in innovation, infrastructure, and workforce development.”

In 2024, companies participating in the EDGE program committed more than $650 million in investments in communities across Illinois.
