159 Early Childhood Scholarship Recipients Celebrated at Truman College Ceremony (Chicago, IL) – Nearly 160 future and current early childhood educators are being honored Thursday evening at Harry S Truman College, marking the achievements of Chicago Early Learning Workforce Scholarship (CELWS) recipients who completed degrees, certifications, or licensures in the field.

The celebration will be held at Truman’s O’Rourke Theatre of Harry S Truman College’s Technical Building from 6 to 8pm on Thursday, August 14, recognizing 159 students, including 62 graduates and program completers from City Colleges of Chicago. Of those, 37 are transferring to four-year institutions such as National Louis University, Roosevelt University, and the University of Illinois at Chicago to pursue bachelor’s degrees in early childhood education.

“The most critical stage for foundational learning is from birth to age five, and that’s why City Colleges of Chicago is deeply committed to supporting the next generation of early childhood educators,” said Chancellor Juan Salgado. “They play a vital role in shaping the foundation for a lifetime of learning.”

The CELWS program provides Chicago residents — whether aspiring educators or experienced early learning professionals — with full tuition coverage, eligible fees, and up to $250 per course for books. In return, recipients commit to at least three years of service in the early childhood field after completing their studies.

“This is a critical investment,” said Sandy DeLeon, executive director of the Chicago Early Learning Workforce Scholarship at Truman College. “When we invest in educators, especially those shaping the earliest stages of learning, we invest in a brighter future for all Chicago.”

The scholarship acts as a “last dollar” award, covering costs not met by federal grants or other scholarships. Students can pursue credentials ranging from basic and advanced certificates to associate and bachelor’s degrees, as well as specialized endorsements and licensure programs.

City Colleges’ registration deadline is Wednesday, Aug. 20, with fall classes beginning Thursday, Aug. 21.
