Commissioner Morrison Blasts Pritzker, Johnson Over Opposition to Federal Assistance in Chicago (Cook County, IL) – Cook County Commissioner Sean Morrison criticized Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson on Tuesday after the two Democratic leaders held a joint press conference opposing reported plans by President Donald Trump to send federal forces, including National Guard personnel and immigration agents, to Chicago.
Pritzker and Johnson called the potential deployment unwarranted, politically motivated, and a threat to local autonomy. They argued that such action would disrupt democratic norms and warned residents to resist federal intervention.
Morrison, a Republican representing the 17th District, called their stance “dangerous” and “deeply irresponsible,” pointing to the ongoing violence that has plagued Chicago neighborhoods. “At a time when many families in Chicago are experiencing tangible threats, hundreds of shootings, home invasions, robberies, and escalating violence, calling for resistance against federal authorities contributes to fear, anger, and anxiety rather than safety,” Morrison said in a statement.
He argued that cooperation with federal resources could help curb violent crime and protect communities. “Standing against cooperation with federal resources, especially those aimed at arresting criminal migrants or curbing mass shootings, strikes me as reckless, particularly from Democrats who claim to support public safety,” Morrison said.
The commissioner urged leaders to prioritize collaboration over partisanship. “Families in Chicago deserve leaders who build bridges, not barricades. We want safety, not spin. We want solutions that put people first, not politics,” he said.
Morrison concluded by calling on elected officials of both parties to “stop weaponizing rhetoric” and work together to ensure safety for Chicago residents.
