Forest Park Mayor, Congressional Candidate Condemns Federal Response at Broadview ICE Facility (Broadview, IL) – Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins, who is running for Congress in Illinois’ 7th District, joined other suburban leaders this week in condemning federal agents’ actions at the Broadview immigration detention center, calling reports of violence against journalists and lack of coordination with local officials “a gross departure from American values.”
Hoskins said he stood with Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson and other municipal leaders on Tuesday to demand accountability from Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal law enforcement agencies.
“We’ve never seen the press come under attack on our soil. This is not consistent with our nation’s Constitution. It is a gross departure from American values,” Hoskins said in a statement.
Local officials cited multiple reports from recent protests outside the facility, including allegations that masked men fired at a reporter’s moving vehicle, assaulted members of the press with tear gas and pellets, and broke car windows without justification.
Hoskins stressed that suburban mayors respect the authority of law enforcement, but said those powers must be exercised responsibly. “Our country has a tradition of respecting press freedom that must be upheld,” he said.
He also urged greater communication between federal agencies, local police, and Broadview officials as tensions around the detention facility escalate.
“There’s no good reason for federal agents not to communicate with local law enforcement and Broadview’s mayor given the current state of conditions,” Hoskins said.
