Lustig Jewelers’ Grand Reopening Marks a New Chapter as Two Longtime Chicago Jewelry Families Unite (Vernon Hills, IL) – Two of Chicagoland’s oldest jewelry legacies are coming together under one roof, as Lustig Jewelers ushers in a new era led by third-generation jeweler Michael Helfer.

Helfer, whose family has been part of Chicago’s diamond and fine-jewelry industry for nearly a century, has taken ownership of Lustig Jewelers, the Vernon Hills boutique founded in 1949 by Ted Lustig. The move brings together two names long synonymous with craftsmanship, customer service and deep roots in the region’s jewelry trade.

The Helfer family’s history dates back to 1933, when Michael’s grandfather, David Helfer, opened his first wholesale diamond office in Chicago. Over the decades, the business expanded into retail and eventually grew to more than 15 storefronts across the Midwest. Michael entered the business in 2003 after a career in sales and marketing, later taking ownership of Gregg Helfer Ltd. in 2016.

Now, he says, Lustig Jewelers is the next chapter in that family legacy.

“Our family has long been part of Chicago’s jewelry history,” Helfer said. “As a third-generation jeweler, I’m excited to bring our family legacy to Lustig’s. We will continue serving our customers with the same trusted staff and skilled jewelers you know, while offering an expanded inventory and a renewed commitment to our community.”

Lustig Jewelers is marking its transition with a monthlong Grand Reopening celebration running through Dec. 24. Festivities kicked off Wednesday with a Sophia By Design trunk show that continues through Thursday. Village officials, including the mayor and members of the Village Board, will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. Thursday, followed by a VIP preview from 5 to 8 p.m.

Throughout the coming weeks, the store will host special showcases and daily promotions, giving customers a chance to explore Lustig’s signature pieces as well as new additions brought in under Helfer’s leadership.
