Will County Clerk Says Mobile Driver’s Licenses Cannot Yet Be Accepted for Key Services (Joliet, IL) – The Will County Clerk’s Office is advising residents that mobile driver’s licenses, or mDLs, cannot currently be used for voter registration, vital records requests, or applications for marriage and civil union licenses.
County Clerk Annette Parker said the office does not yet have the specialized technology required to securely read or verify digital IDs. The announcement comes as Illinois and other states expand access to app-based identification, raising questions about where and how the new format can be used.
Parker said her office has been in communication with the Illinois State Board of Elections’ director of election operations and is following state recommendations while the county evaluates necessary upgrades.
“We are committed to expanding the use of modern, secure identification methods,” Parker said in a statement. “However, we must ensure our facilities have the proper technology to read mobile IDs before they can be integrated into the voter registration process or the services we provide.”
The clerk’s office plans to adopt the technology once approved equipment becomes available. Until then, residents must continue presenting a physical, state-issued driver’s license or ID card for any service requiring identification.
Updates on equipment installation and future mobile ID acceptance will be posted by the clerk’s office. A full list of acceptable identification forms is available at willcountyclerk.gov or by calling 815-740-4615.
