Harvey City Council Fails to Appoint Acting Mayor Following Mayor Clark’s Death (Harvey, IL) — The Harvey City Council was unable to appoint an acting mayor during a special meeting held Tuesday night following the recent death of Mayor Christopher J. Clark, leaving the city’s leadership structure unchanged for now.
According to city officials, no nominee received the four affirmative votes required to be appointed acting mayor under city procedures. As a result, First Ward Alderman Shirley Drewenski will continue to serve as mayor pro tempore while the council determines its next steps.
Drewenski, who addressed the public following the meeting, said the council convened specifically to address the process of appointing an acting mayor in the wake of Mayor Clark’s passing. With no successful vote, she said the council will continue deliberations at future meetings in accordance with state law and city rules.
Despite the leadership uncertainty, city officials emphasized that municipal operations remain fully functional.
“Most importantly, city services and operations remain in place, and the City of Harvey continues to serve residents without interruption,” Drewenski said in a statement. “Our focus remains on stability, transparency, and ensuring the work of government continues.”
Mayor Clark’s death was confirmed earlier this week by the City of Harvey, prompting an outpouring of condolences from residents, elected officials, and community organizations. Clark had served as mayor since 2019 and was a prominent figure in local Democratic politics.
Illinois law allows municipal councils to appoint an acting mayor when a vacancy occurs, but requires a majority vote of the corporate authorities. Until such an appointment is made, the mayor pro tempore presides over meetings and carries out limited executive functions.
City officials said additional updates regarding leadership decisions will be shared through official City of Harvey communication channels as the process moves forward.
