Meyers-Martin Calls for ‘Responsible and Compassionate’ State Budget Following Governor’s Address (Springfield, IL) – State Rep. Debbie Meyers-Martin, D-Olympia Fields, is urging lawmakers to prioritize families and maintain fiscal discipline as they begin negotiations on the state’s next budget.
In a statement released Wednesday after the governor delivered his annual budget address to the General Assembly, Meyers-Martin emphasized the need for what she described as a “responsible and compassionate plan” that addresses community concerns while strengthening essential services.
“As we begin the budget negotiating process, we need to focus on delivering a responsible and compassionate plan that addresses community concerns and uplifts families,” Meyers-Martin said.
The South Suburban lawmaker pointed to economic uncertainty at the federal level as an added challenge for Illinois residents, saying state leaders must take a steady and human-centered approach in the months ahead.
“These are difficult days for many, and uncertainty from Washington has only added more concern,” she said. “That’s why we need to craft a strong, human-centered proposal that reinforces education, child care, health care and more.”
Meyers-Martin also highlighted recent efforts to stabilize Illinois’ finances, noting that she believes those measures have better prepared the state to respond to potential federal funding disruptions. She said maintaining fiscal discipline will be key as lawmakers weigh investments in schools, safety-net hospitals, food assistance programs and other essential services.
“In recent years, we’ve taken significant steps to stabilize and strengthen our state’s finances,” she said. “Maintaining this financial discipline so that we can be more flexible and able to handle challenges as they arise will be critical.”
The governor’s proposal now heads to legislative committees, where lawmakers will review spending priorities and revenue projections before negotiating a final budget agreement later this spring.
Meyers-Martin said she plans to closely examine the proposal and advocate for the needs of her district during the process.
“Today is the start of a larger conversation,” she said. “I look forward to reviewing the governor’s proposal in detail, and making sure our community’s voice is heard as we look to invest in an affordable future for all.”
