Preston Backs Governor’s Budget, Says Illinois ‘Refuses to Lay Down’ (Springfield, IL) – State Sen. Willie Preston, D-Chicago, voiced support for Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s proposed budget following the governor’s annual budget and State of the State address, praising the plan’s focus on food access and assistance programs amid federal policy changes.

In a statement released after the address, Preston criticized the Trump administration, accusing it of cutting programs and benefits that Illinois communities rely on. He said the state is taking a stand by advancing a budget that seeks to counterbalance those pressures.

“As the Trump administration continues to strip our state of the programs and benefits our communities need and deserve, Illinois refuses to lay down,” Preston said.

Preston commended the governor for proposing additional resources to help residents who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits navigate new and changing requirements. He said the added support would help ensure eligible families maintain access to food assistance.

The senator also highlighted the governor’s proposal to increase funding aimed at improving access to healthy food in areas considered food deserts — communities with limited access to grocery stores and fresh produce.

“Food insecurity continues to persist,” Preston said, adding that the proposed funding aligns with legislation he is sponsoring that would recognize food as a right rather than a privilege.

As budget negotiations move forward in the General Assembly, Preston said he plans to continue advocating for policies that support working families and invest in underserved neighborhoods.

“Over the coming months, I will continue fighting to uplift our families, protect our resources, and invest in neighborhoods that deserve opportunity and stability,” he said.
