Illinois Encourages Taxpayers to Support Public Health Programs Through Voluntary Contributions (Springfield, IL) – As Illinois residents prepare to file their 2025 state income tax returns, state officials are reminding taxpayers that they have the option to support a range of public health and human services programs through the state’s voluntary contribution program.

The initiative, available through Schedule G on the Illinois income tax form, allows taxpayers to designate a portion of their state tax refund to charitable funds that support health research, food assistance and services for vulnerable populations.

Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Sameer Vohra said even small contributions can have a meaningful impact.

“For as little as one dollar, Illinois taxpayers can make a voluntary contribution that can make a big difference for people dealing with Alzheimer’s disease or diabetes, for the unhoused and hungry, or for the families of sick children,” Vohra said. “I hope those who are able to do so will consider taking this opportunity to utilize the convenient voluntary contribution program to support programs that improve public health and the quality of life for many in our state.”

Illinois Department of Revenue Director David Harris said the program provides a straightforward way for residents to support important services while filing their taxes.

“The voluntary contribution program is a simple and secure way for taxpayers to direct a portion of their refunds to important programs that benefit individuals and families throughout our state,” Harris said. “When filing returns, taxpayers can use Schedule G to easily designate a contribution to one or more charitable funds.”

Several of the funds included in the program directly support public health initiatives in Illinois.

The Alzheimer’s Disease Research, Care, and Support Fund helps finance research into the progressive brain disorder while also supporting programs that assist patients, families and caregivers.

The Assistance to the Homeless Fund addresses homelessness, which health officials note is a major public health concern. Donations help local agencies provide shelter, meals and services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

The Diabetes Research Fund supports research on the detection, prevention, screening, management and treatment of diabetes. The disease affects an estimated 1.3 million Illinois residents, with many more potentially undiagnosed. Half of the funds raised are dedicated to research into juvenile diabetes.

Taxpayers can also contribute to the Hunger Relief Fund, which supports food banks and hunger assistance programs across the state. Food insecurity affects about one in eight Illinois residents, with children among the most vulnerable.

Another option is the Ronald McDonald House Charities Fund, which helps provide housing, support services and access to medical care for families with seriously ill children.

State officials encourage taxpayers interested in participating to review Schedule G when completing their Illinois tax return.
