Evans Urges Senate to Pass SAVE Act Ahead of Primary (Hyde Park, IL) – U.S. Senate candidate Jeannie Evans is calling on the Senate to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, arguing that stronger voter identification requirements would help ensure secure elections.
Evans, a Republican candidate in the upcoming primary, said election integrity should be a bipartisan priority and urged lawmakers to take action on the legislation, which has already passed the U.S. House of Representatives and is awaiting consideration in the Senate.
“Protecting elections should not be a partisan issue,” Evans said in a statement. “Republicans and Democrats should both want safe and secure elections.”
The SAVE Act would require proof of citizenship and voter identification measures aimed at preventing ineligible individuals from casting ballots in federal elections.
Evans said identification is already required in many everyday situations and should similarly be required for voting.
“We need IDs to board a plane, pick up tickets at a will call window, and purchase allergy medicine,” Evans said. “There is no reason for voters not to be required to show some form of ID. This is an 80-20 issue that has broad support from both political parties.”
Evans urged the Senate to take up the measure and pass it.
“It is time for the Senate to act and pass this important piece of legislation,” she said.
Evans is one of several candidates seeking the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in Illinois. The primary election is scheduled for March 17.
