Chicago Students Celebrate First-Ever Chi-Craft Graduation at Chicago State University (Chicago, IL) – Chicago Public Schools students gathered at Chicago State University on Saturday, April 25, to mark a milestone in STEM education: the first-ever Chi-Craft “Quantum Leap” Competition and Program Graduation. The event, held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., served as the culmination of a 10-week afterschool program designed to introduce students to quantum computing concepts through the popular video game Minecraft.
Developed by the CPS Applied Computer Science Team, the Chi-Craft program takes an unconventional approach to STEM learning by using a platform familiar to students to explore complex, real-world topics. This year’s focus centered on urban planning and the future applications of quantum computing, challenging participants to envision innovative designs for the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park.
Nearly 30 teams of middle and high school students from across Chicago took part in the program, each developing their own digital models and proposals. During the event, students presented their Minecraft builds, explained the ideas behind their designs, and participated in live final build challenges. A panel discussion featuring leaders in the quantum sector also gave students exposure to professionals working in the rapidly evolving field.
Organizers said the initiative is part of a broader effort to expand access to emerging technology education, particularly for students on the city’s Southeast Side and throughout Chicago. By blending gaming with advanced scientific concepts, Chi-Craft aims to make fields like quantum computing more accessible and engaging for young learners.
The competition component will continue into next week, when teams are expected to present their final builds, with one group ultimately selected as this year’s winner.
