Rep. Sheehan Responds to Fatal Shooting of Chicago Police Officer, Criticizes Pretrial Policies (Homer Glen, IL) – State Rep. Patrick Sheehan issued a statement following a shooting at Swedish Hospital that left one Chicago police officer dead and another critically injured, calling the incident a “devastating loss” and raising concerns about Illinois’ criminal justice system.

Authorities said Officer John Bartholomew, 38, was killed in the shooting, while a second officer, a 57-year-old veteran of the department, remains in critical condition.

In his response, Sheehan, who also serves as a police officer, expressed condolences to the victims’ families and the law enforcement community. He also criticized provisions of Illinois’ SAFE-T Act, arguing that the state’s pretrial system allows repeat violent offenders to remain free despite prior offenses and violations.

Sheehan pointed to the suspect’s criminal history, including a conviction for aggravated battery of a peace officer, as well as alleged violations of electronic monitoring and missed court appearances. He said these factors highlight what he described as systemic failures in responding to repeat offenders.

Illinois’ SAFE-T Act has significantly reformed the state’s pretrial system, placing greater emphasis on release and supervision rather than cash bail. Supporters of the law argue it creates a more equitable system, while critics, including Sheehan, say it can pose risks to public safety if not properly enforced.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
