Illinois Democrats Mark Four Years Since Dobbs Decision, Criticize Republican Abortion Policies (Springfield, IL) – On the fourth anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade, the Democratic Party of Illinois renewed its support for abortion rights and criticized Republican-led efforts it says threaten reproductive health care access.

In a statement released Wednesday, Democratic Party of Illinois Chair Lisa Hernandez said Illinois has emerged as a safeguard for reproductive health care since the 2022 ruling eliminated federal constitutional protections for abortion.

“Illinois Democrats have been unwavering in our belief—and actions—that women have a right to choose,” Hernandez said.

The Democratic Party of Illinois accused Republicans at both the state and federal levels of pursuing policies that would restrict abortion access and reproductive health services. Hernandez also criticized Republican positions on programs such as SNAP, Medicaid and federal education funding, arguing those policies are inconsistent with claims of supporting families and children.

The party highlighted several proposals introduced by Republican lawmakers during the current legislative cycle. Among them was a bill sponsored by Sen. Neil Anderson that sought to recognize a fertilized egg as a legal person, a proposal Democrats argue could have significant implications for abortion rights. Anderson later stepped down from his Republican leadership position.

Democrats also pointed to legislation introduced by U.S. Rep. Mary Miller, describing it as an effort to restrict abortion access, including telehealth abortion services. Supporters of the measure have argued it addresses environmental concerns, while critics contend it is aimed at limiting reproductive health care.

The anniversary comes as Illinois continues to position itself as one of the nation’s strongest supporters of abortion rights. State lawmakers previously approved legislation codifying abortion rights into state law and have enacted protections for patients and health care providers.

Democrats also highlighted recent state budget investments in reproductive health initiatives, including funding for patient navigation services designed to help individuals access reproductive care. State leaders said additional funding was included in subsequent budgets to expand reproductive health programs.

Earlier this year, Illinois lawmakers also expanded protections under the Illinois Human Rights Act, prohibiting discrimination based on reproductive health decisions, including abortion, fertility treatments and in vitro fertilization.

State officials have additionally taken steps to preserve access to reproductive health services in response to federal regulatory changes affecting contraceptive coverage.

The Dobbs decision, issued on June 24, 2022, returned authority over abortion laws to individual states, resulting in a patchwork of policies nationwide. Since then, Illinois has become a destination for patients seeking reproductive health care from states with more restrictive abortion laws.
