Aaron Del Mar’s Abortion Remarks Draw Criticism as Illinois GOP Faces Calls to Respond (Chicago, IL) – Republican lieutenant governor candidate Aaron Del Mar is facing renewed criticism over his comments about abortion, with the Democratic Party of Illinois questioning whether Republican leaders will condemn his remarks.
Del Mar, the running mate of Republican gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey, made the comments during a “Save America” rally in Springfield sponsored by Illinois Family Action, an anti-abortion organization, according to the Democratic Party of Illinois.
At the rally, Del Mar criticized Illinois’ abortion policies and Gov. JB Pritzker, saying the governor was “willing to murder millions of babies.”
Del Mar also said, “Nobody wants to make Illinois a Mecca for abortions from everyone around the country to come here and sin against God.”
The comments come after Del Mar previously rejected Democratic claims that he and Bailey would seek to restrict reproductive health care in Illinois.
“No matter how many times JB Pritzker and the Democrat majority try to say that Darren and Aaron are going to try to take away women’s access to reproductive care, that is a flat-out lie,” Del Mar said in July.
The Democratic Party of Illinois is now calling on Illinois Republicans to address Del Mar’s comments and clarify their position on abortion and reproductive rights.
The party argued that voters should know whether Illinois Republican leaders support Del Mar’s characterization of abortion and his calls to oppose Illinois’ role as a destination for abortion services.
The comments add another point of contention to the developing 2026 Illinois gubernatorial campaign, as Bailey and Del Mar prepare to face Democratic opponents in the general election.
