DPI Joins Senator Belt, George McClellan and The Doula Lab for Metro East Community Baby Shower (Belleville, IL) – The Democratic Party of Illinois joined State Sen. Christopher Belt, 114th House District candidate George McClellan and The Doula Lab for a community baby shower that provided free infant supplies to 52 expecting families in the Metro East.
The event, held in Belleville, also included free back-to-school supplies and a community resource fair designed to connect families with additional resources.
Democratic Party of Illinois Chair Lisa Hernandez said the event represented a new effort by the party to engage directly with communities across the state.
“Last weekend’s baby shower was something DPI has never done before, and it’s a part of the Party’s broader goal of reaching communities throughout Illinois in meaningful, lasting ways,” Hernandez said. “I was proud to do it alongside Senator Belt, The Doula Lab, and candidate McClellan.”
Belt, D-Swansea, said the event reflected the importance of supporting families in the Metro East.
“Showing up for our communities is how we make them stronger,” Belt said. “As a lifelong member of the Metro East community, I was proud to be a part of making sure expecting families get the supplies they need.”
The community baby shower also highlighted Illinois Democrats’ continued focus on addressing disparities in maternal health, particularly within Black communities.
Organizers said the event was part of broader efforts that include both legislative initiatives and community-based programs aimed at supporting expecting families and improving maternal health outcomes.
The event brought together Belt, McClellan, Hernandez and The Doula Lab Pregnancy Resource Center Founder Charity S. Bean as community partners supporting Metro East families.
