Illinois Democrats Say Federal SNAP Cuts Will Hurt Families and Small Farmers (Springfield, IL) – The Democratic Party of Illinois is criticizing congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump over recent federal cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), arguing the reductions will impact both families facing food insecurity and the state’s agricultural economy.

The party said changes included in the Republican-backed “One Big Beautiful Bill” are expected to reduce food assistance for an estimated 360,000 Illinois residents while also affecting programs that connect SNAP recipients with locally grown food.

Among the programs impacted is Link Match, which helped SNAP participants purchase fresh produce and other goods from local farmers by matching benefits spent at participating markets and retailers.

According to the Democratic Party of Illinois, many small farms depend on SNAP purchases as a significant source of revenue. The party cited reporting from Capitol News Illinois indicating that one central Illinois food business generated approximately $40,000 in annual SNAP and Link Match sales, while another farm reported that SNAP purchases accounted for roughly 25% of its local sales.

Illinois Democratic Party Chair Lisa Hernandez said the funding reductions could have broader economic consequences beyond food assistance.

“Illinois is a national agricultural leader because of the hard work of our farmers, and instead of uplifting them, Republicans deliberately took money out of their wallets,” Hernandez said. “Republicans were happy to slash food assistance to punish low-income families, even when that meant putting our economy at risk. Their ‘America First’ talk is nothing more than a charade.”

The party also pointed to Capitol News Illinois reporting that inflation-adjusted net farm income nationwide is projected to decline by approximately $4.1 billion, or 2.6%, in 2026 compared with the previous year, despite record levels of government payments.

According to the report, rising production costs, lower commodity prices, and reduced consumer purchasing power have created additional financial pressures for small farms.

Capitol News Illinois also quoted advocates who said relatively modest SNAP sales can make the difference between profitability and closure for local farms that sell directly to consumers through farmers markets and neighborhood grocery stores.

Illinois has one of the nation’s largest agricultural sectors, with roughly 75% of the state’s land used for farming.
