Cook County Clerk Gordon Calls for State Disaster Declaration After Southland Storms (Cook County, IL) – Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon is calling on Gov. JB Pritzker and state officials to quickly assess storm damage across the Southland and make recovery resources available to residents affected by a series of severe storms.
In a statement, Gordon said she experienced significant storm damage herself and was without power for several days, making the recent storms a personal experience.
“I know firsthand how frightening and disruptive severe weather can be when homes are damaged, power is lost, and families are left wondering how they will begin to recover,” Gordon said.
Gordon, a longtime Southland resident and former Cook County commissioner, said repeated severe weather has placed a significant strain on communities across the region. She urged state officials to consider issuing a disaster proclamation in response to the damage.
“Given the severity and repeated nature of these storms, I believe a state disaster proclamation should be considered to ensure our communities have the support they need to recover and rebuild,” Gordon said.
She also praised first responders, municipal employees, utility crews and residents who have been assisting communities following the storms.
“In difficult moments like these, the strength of the Southland shines through,” Gordon said.
Gordon encouraged Cook County residents whose homes or property were damaged to rely on their communities for support as recovery efforts continue.
“To everyone in Cook County whose home or property has been damaged, I know what you are going through, and I want you to know that you are not alone,” she said. “Your neighbors are standing with you, and together we will get through this.”
