Joliet boxer Traishawn Traylor draws on family legacy in pursuit of growth (Joliet, IL) — For Traishawn “Tray” Traylor, progress in boxing is measured by more than the result announced at the end of a fight.
The 140-pound boxer, who trains at Groves Boxing Gym in Joliet, has compiled a 13-12 record during six years in the sport. Each bout, he said, has offered an opportunity to learn, whether it ended in victory or defeat.
“The ups and downs are just experience,” Traylor said. “I plan on taking all of it to show kids who grew up just like me that no matter what you have going on, you can prevail.”
Traylor’s connection to boxing began long before he entered a formal gym. One of eight children, he grew up sparring with his siblings in the family living room under the direction of his father. He also follows a family tradition established by his grandfather, who boxed professionally.
Those early experiences helped shape an approach centered on discipline and persistence. At 5-foot-10, Traylor brings height and reach to the 140-pound division, but he views adaptability and accumulated experience as equally important parts of his development.
Rather than dismissing the losses on his record, Traylor studies them alongside his victories. He believes the challenges he has encountered have strengthened his decision-making and prepared him to make adjustments against different opponents.
That perspective also informs his ambitions outside the ring.
Traylor hopes to use his boxing career and personal experiences to reach young people growing up in circumstances similar to his own. His message emphasizes perseverance and the idea that setbacks do not have to determine a person’s future.
As he continues training at Groves Boxing Gym, Traylor is preparing for future bouts while working to expand his role in the community. His goal is not only to advance as a fighter, but also to demonstrate how discipline and resilience can help people move through adversity.
For Traylor, the record tells only part of the story. The larger measure of his career will be what he does with the lessons behind it.
