Terry Cummings Foundation to Unveil Major Far South Side Investment Vision During ‘Operation Legacy’ Kickoff (Chicago, IL) – NBA legend and Chicago native Terry Cummings is set to bring together a coalition of sports figures, elected officials, community leaders, developers, educators and philanthropic partners Monday for the launch of Operation Legacy: Give Back — Week of Impact, a weeklong initiative focused on supporting families and expanding opportunities on Chicago’s Far South Side.
The Terry Cummings Foundation will host the kickoff at 11 a.m. Aug. 17 at the Altgeld Gardens Family Resource Center, where organizers say they will unveil a major, previously unrevealed project envisioned for the Far South Side.
According to the foundation, the project is intended to empower youth, support families, attract economic investment, stimulate community growth and create sustainable opportunities that can benefit generations of residents.
Cummings, a Chicago native and former NBA All-Star, will lead the announcement alongside NBA legends, elected officials, business and investment partners, community and faith leaders, educators, youth advocates and philanthropic stakeholders.
The launch will also begin the foundation’s Operation Legacy: Give Back — Week of Impact, which will feature several community-focused events and initiatives.
Among the planned activities is a Mega Food & Household Giveaway serving all 1,500 families in Altgeld Gardens, along with a community gas giveaway and a Safe Teen Social designed to provide young people with a positive environment to connect.
The week will also include a Voices of Freedom Voter Registration & Reparations Event and the Terry Cummings All-Star Golf Classic, which is expected to bring together NBA legends, business leaders, elected officials and community stakeholders.
Organizers say the broader initiative is designed to pair immediate assistance for residents with a longer-term vision for economic development and community investment.
Participants listed for the kickoff include Alderman Peter Chico, CHA Board of Commissioners Chairman Jawanza Malone, SSCF Credit Union President Gregg Brown, State Sen. Napoleon Harris, Commissioner Dr. Kisha McCaskill, Altgeld Gardens community leader Bernadette Williams and representatives from DePaul University, Blue Cross Blue Shield, development and investment groups, faith organizations and youth-serving organizations.
