Dixmoor Launches Village-Wide Water Meter Replacement Program(Dixmoor, IL) — The Village of Dixmoor is beginning a village-wide effort to replace water meters as part of an infrastructure upgrade officials say will improve billing accuracy and the reliability of water service for residents and businesses.
The meter replacement program is intended to eliminate estimated water bills and provide more accurate monthly readings for ratepayers. Village officials say the project is part of a broader effort to modernize Dixmoor’s water system and address aging infrastructure.
Calumet City Plumbing will handle the meter surveys and replacements. Company representatives are expected to visit properties Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. During the initial visit, workers will inspect the existing meter and, depending on the conditions at the property, may be able to replace it at the same time.
The Village of Dixmoor will cover the cost of both the surveys and meter replacements. Residents and businesses will not be billed for the work.
Mayor Fitzgerald Roberts described the project as an investment in the village’s long-term water infrastructure.
“Upgrading our water meter infrastructure is an important investment in the future of Dixmoor,” Roberts said. “This program will improve reliability and dependability of our water service to our residents. It also will eliminate estimated billing and insure accuracy every month for ratepayers. This is a significant step forward for the Village of Dixmoor.”
The project will require cooperation from property owners and residents to allow installers access to the water meter. Village officials are asking residents to make sure the area surrounding their meter is accessible before the scheduled visit.
An adult who is at least 18 years old must also be present during the appointment. The requirement is intended to ensure installers can access the meter and address any issues that may arise during the inspection or replacement.
Residents should also be aware that water service could be temporarily interrupted while a meter is being replaced. The length of any interruption will depend on the circumstances at the property and the work required to complete the installation.
A functioning internal shutoff valve is required for the replacement process. If a property does not have a properly working internal shutoff valve, Calumet City Plumbing will coordinate with the village for a temporary street shutoff so the work can be completed.
Village Clerk Juanita Darden-Thompson said officials want residents to feel comfortable with the process and to have a way to confirm the identity of workers arriving at their homes.
“Our goal is to make this process convenient, safe and transparent for every household,” Darden-Thompson said. “Residents can ask installers for official company identification and contact the Village if they need to verify an installer’s identity.”
According to the village, all Calumet City Plumbing representatives working on the project will carry and present official company identification when they arrive at a property.
Residents who are uncertain about an installer’s identity can contact the Village of Dixmoor at (708) 389-6121 to verify that the individual is authorized to conduct work as part of the meter replacement program.
Property owners who would rather arrange a specific time for an inspection and replacement can contact Calumet City Plumbing directly at (708) 868-0074, extension 614.
An appointment is not necessary for water meters located in outdoor meter pits, according to village officials. Those meters can be accessed by installers without requiring an adult to provide access to the interior of a property.
The program is expected to have a direct impact on how water usage is measured and billed in Dixmoor. Estimated billing can occur when an actual meter reading is unavailable, potentially resulting in bills that do not reflect a property’s precise water consumption for a given period. By replacing meters and improving the village’s ability to obtain actual readings, officials say the project will help ensure greater accuracy.
The modernization effort comes as Dixmoor continues working on improvements to its water infrastructure. Roberts said the meter replacement is one part of the village’s ongoing work to improve water service for the community.
“We ask for and would appreciate residents’ cooperation as we work to upgrade Dixmoor’s water infrastructure,” Roberts said. “This is another step toward the modernization of our water infrastructure. We still have some work to do but we are making tremendous progress in improving water service to our community.”
Village officials are encouraging residents to prepare for the visits by ensuring that their water meter areas are accessible and that an adult age 18 or older is available when an interior meter requires access.
Residents who have questions about the program, need to verify an installer or want additional information can contact the Village of Dixmoor at (708) 389-6121. Those seeking to schedule an inspection or replacement may contact Calumet City Plumbing at (708) 868-0074, ext. 614.
The village is asking residents to cooperate with installers as the work proceeds, saying the effort will help Dixmoor move toward a more modern water system while providing more dependable service and accurate billing to the community.
